All the beaches on the island of Hydra, in Greece, are essentially rocky and only reachable via water taxi or similar boat. As the island is vehicle-free, the roads get creatively narrow and it's blissfully quiet. Donkeys remain the main mode of transport and hauling goods. Which is rather charming. Until you think about the searing heat and the difficult lives those donkeys must be living. /

Mosquito gas wafting through the streets of Havana on a hot August evening as the sun sets. From 2016-2018 a mysterious illness, causing dizziness, headaches, blurred vision and even memory loss, affected about forty US and Canadian diplomats working in Cuba. It was originally thought to be some kind of secret sonic weapon, causing the US to withdraw all but a minimum of representatives and the Trump administration charging Cuba of an attack. But a report released in 2019 and commissioned by the Canadian government, found the symptoms were consistent with an overexposure to cholinesterase inhibitors used in mosquito fumigation. Cuba had increased the gasses all over the city, and near the homes of the diplomats, in an effort to combat Zika virus. /

Founded in 1890 on the Greek Island of Hydra, the Rafalias Pharmacy is currently run by the founder’s great grandson, Andreas Rafalias, shown here with his father. Using old family recipes and notes—dating to the Greek Pharmacology of 1923 and 1931, and passed down through the generations—the pharmacy still produces their own creams, lotions and perfumes from all natural, pure ingredients. /

Vineyards weave over the rolling green hills in Sonoma county’s Dry Creek Valley like stitches on a quilt. Nestled in a quiet, shallow valley is Single Thread Farm. The farm provides much of the produce and ingredients, like fresh eggs and olive oil, for the restaurant of the same name, centrally located in the town of Healdsburg. After the sun goes down on a warm day, microclimates typical of the area usher in cool evenings and overnight fog thanks to the nearby coast, allowing for a diverse quilt of humidities and temperatures, making it ideal for growing not only grapevines, but all kinds of plants. Add to that, a reliably long summer season, and the result is something close to perfect. The catchphrase Farm to Table is quite literally the ethos for this three Michelin-starred dining destination. /

On a quieter edge of Chania’s old Venetian harbor, amongst the fisherman’s boats and simple tavernas, a woman sells sea sponges from a boat. Crete, the southernmost and largest of the Greek Islands, is a land with abundant natural gifts—olive trees as far as the eye can see, hillsides of wild greens and oregano, fish from the Aegean, dry-farmed tomatoes, unique wine varietals, and more. It’s a bounty that belies a sparse, mountainous, bone dry landscape. Without the tourist hoards of Santorini or Mykonos, and despite several important archeological sites, Crete feels accessible. It’s a place you can glimpse the real day-to-day life of those that live and work there, but also enjoy incredible local cuisine and some of the most beautiful beaches around. /

At Floradita, a bar in the center of Old Havana, Ernest Hemingway was such a loyal patron that he's immortalized as a brass statue, seated at the bar near the entrance. The bartenders serve hoards of tourists in a non-stop flow, pouring traditional Hemingway Daiquiris (which are blended), regardless of the season. /

Ghent, Belgium is a city that prides itself on its stretches of beautiful old buildings that line the waterways, and arguably look even more impressive by night, than by day. /

In Falassarna, on Crete's far western coast the beaches are some of the most picturesque, accessible, and far less visited than their counterparts in France and Italy, where unclaimed sandy spots are rare. /

At the Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete, visitors can wander through several microclimates along a self-guided path, to see a vast range of plants growing, including Mediterranean, tropical, medicinal, citrus, herbal, native Greek, and even a few alpine species. There’s also a leafy hilltop restaurant serving hearty meals made entirely of local foods with a focus on zero-waste production, where cooking classes can be arranged for groups, and a thoughtful gift shop featuring products made from the gardens. /

Fog burns off the hills at dawn as the sun rises on Calistoga Ranch in California's Napa Valley, warming up the historic property’s autumn-hued vineyards, now lost. The entire luxury resort and surrounding vegetation burned ferociously during the 2020 fires that swept through the area devastating the region. World-class resorts, homes, wineries and restaurants in this beautiful, expensive part of the state, were all destroyed along with the livelihoods of thousands. /
